How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer in Yorkshire (Without Losing Your Mind)

Choosing your wedding photographer can feel a bit overwhelming. There are loads of photographers out there, all with pretty Instagram feeds and all claiming to be “natural and relaxed” (spoiler: not all of them are).
Whether you’re getting married in Leeds, Halifax or somewhere beautiful in between, finding the right Yorkshire wedding photographer is about more than just liking someone’s photos. You’re choosing the person who’ll be with you for pretty much your entire wedding day… so yeah, it matters.
I’m Louise from Louise Pollitt Photography, and as a Yorkshire wedding photographer covering Leeds and Halifax, here’s my honest advice on how to choose the right photographer for your day (without spiralling into a late-night Google rabbit hole).

Step One: Do You Actually Like Their Photos?
Sounds obvious, but don’t just look at the highlights on Instagram. Dig into full galleries on their website.
Ask yourself:
Do I like how real people look in these photos?
Do the photos feel natural or overly posed?
Can I imagine myself in them?
Do people look happy… or slightly terrified?
A good Yorkshire wedding photographer should be able to handle:
Rain
Sun
Dark venues
Emotional mums
Drunk uncles
Awkward group photos
If their galleries look consistently good across different Leeds and Halifax wedding venues, that’s a really good sign.
Step Two: Vibe Check (This Is Massive)
This is one of the most important parts.
Your photographer isn’t just popping in for 10 minutes to snap a few pictures. I’ll be there while you’re getting ready, during your ceremony, through your speeches and sometimes while you’re ugly-crying into a napkin.
So it’s worth asking:
Do I feel comfortable with them?
Do they sound friendly and relaxed?
Would I enjoy having them around all day?
A great Leeds wedding photographer or Halifax wedding photographer should feel more like an extra guest than a supplier. Someone who helps you feel calm, not awkward.

Step Three: Local Knowledge Is a Secret Weapon
One of the biggest perks of choosing a Yorkshire wedding photographer is local knowledge.
I know:
The best photo spots around Leeds city centre
Where the good light is at Halifax wedding venues
How Yorkshire weather usually behaves (moody skies included)
Which venues are dark and need experience
From Kirkstall Abbey to Shibden Hall, from industrial Leeds venues to countryside barns, knowing the area means I can make the most of whatever your day throws at us.
And when the rain appears (because… Yorkshire), I already have a plan B.
Step Four: Decide What Style Actually Feels Like You
There’s no right or wrong here — just what feels like you.
Some photographers are very posed and traditional. Others (like me) focus more on documentary-style storytelling, capturing things as they really happen.
If you love:
Laughing photos
Natural moments
People being themselves
Not feeling awkward
Then you’ll probably love a relaxed, documentary approach to wedding photography.
This works brilliantly for:
Leeds city weddings
Halifax countryside weddings
Big parties
Small intimate days
Basically: less “stand there and smile” and more “this is what actually happened”.

Step Five: It’s Not Just About the Camera
Professional wedding photography isn’t just turning up and pressing a button.
You’re paying for:
Experience
Backup equipment
Professional editing
Knowing when to step in and when to disappear
Staying calm when things run late
Helping your day flow naturally
As a Yorkshire wedding photographer, my job is to make sure you enjoy your day while I quietly capture everything that matters.
Step Six: Trust Your Gut
If you love their work, like their personality and feel excited after chatting to them… that’s probably your photographer.
Not the cheapest. Not the one with the most followers. The one that feels right.

Leeds or Halifax Wedding? Same Rule Applies
Whether you’re planning:
A cool city wedding in Leeds
A rustic Halifax barn wedding
A big Yorkshire celebration
A tiny intimate ceremony
The most important thing is choosing someone who understands you and how you want your day remembered.
Your wedding photos should feel like your day, not a styled shoot that doesn’t look like real life.
Final Thought (An Important One)
Years from now, you won’t care about trends. You’ll care about:
How it felt
Who was there
The laughter
The tears
The madness
The love
And that’s exactly what I aim to capture at Louise Pollitt Photography — honest, joyful, real moments from your wedding day.
