If you're expecting a baby, you probably have a rather long list of things to organise before they arrive. Somewhere between choosing a pram, packing your hospital bag and wondering whether you really need that many tiny sleepsuits, you might also be thinking about newborn photographs.

One of the questions I'm asked most often is: when should I book my Leeds and Halifax newborn photoshoot?

The short answer is that it's usually best to book your yorkshire newborn photographer while you're still pregnant.

Don't worry, though—you don't need to know exactly when your baby will arrive. Babies aren't particularly interested in calendars, after all!

Here's everything you need to know about when to book your yorkshire newborn photography session, the best age for newborn photos and what happens if your little one arrives earlier or later than expected.

When should I book my Yorkshire newborn photographer?

If you know you'd like newborn photographs, I recommend getting in touch during your pregnancy.

Newborn photographers can only accommodate a certain number of sessions each month, particularly because babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date. Booking ahead means I can reserve space around the time your baby is expected.

You don't usually need to choose the exact date of your newborn photoshoot at this stage.

Instead, your due date can be used as a guide. Once your baby arrives, you can get back in touch and arrange the session according to their actual birthday.

It means there's one less thing to organise when you're at home getting to know your new baby.

What is the best age for newborn photos?

The ideal age depends partly on the style of newborn photography you're looking for.

For the sleepy, curled-up newborn photographs you often see, sessions are commonly held during the first few weeks after birth and no more than 16 days. At this age, babies are still very new, spend lots of time sleeping and naturally tend to curl themselves into those gorgeous little positions.

However, there isn't a magical day when your opportunity for newborn photographs suddenly disappears.

Beautiful photographs can still be created with an older newborn. Your baby may be more alert, stretch out more or spend longer looking around, but those characteristics can produce lovely images too.

Every baby is different, which is why I prefer to work around the baby in front of me rather than expecting every newborn to behave in exactly the same way.

Can I book my Yorkshire newborn photoshoot after my baby is born?

Absolutely.

Booking during pregnancy gives you the best chance of securing a space, but not everyone decides they want newborn photographs before their baby arrives.

Sometimes you don't realise just how quickly those tiny newborn details are changing until you're watching it happen.

If your baby is already here, contact me as soon as you can.

What happens if my baby arrives early or late?

This is exactly why yorkshire newborn photographers don't expect babies to stick rigidly to their due dates.

Your due date gives us an idea of when your baby might arrive, but your actual session can be arranged or adjusted once they're here.

If your baby decides to make an unexpectedly early appearance, don't panic about your photography session. Let me know when you're able to.

Likewise, if your due date comes and goes with no sign of your little one, there's no need to worry about losing your session simply because your baby has their own timetable.

Your wellbeing and your baby's wellbeing always come first.

What if my baby won't sleep during the photoshoot?

This is another very common worry.

Parents sometimes arrive convinced their baby is the one newborn who simply won't sleep for photographs.

You don't need to make your baby sleep before your session, and you certainly don't need to worry if they're awake when you arrive.

Newborn sessions should allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, changing and settling. There's no expectation for a tiny baby to perform on demand.

And awake photographs can be just as special. Those little expressions, stretches, yawns and moments of eye contact are part of your baby's story too.

How long does a yorkshire newborn photoshoot take?

Newborn photography is generally much slower paced than an ordinary portrait session.

That's intentional.

Your baby may need feeding halfway through. They may need a nappy change just as everything is ready. They might want ten minutes of cuddles—or considerably longer.

A newborn session shouldn't feel rushed.

The exact length will depend on your photographer and the type of session you've booked, so check what is included when you're comparing newborn photographers.

What should I bring to my yorkshire newborn photoshoot?

I will tell you exactly what you need before your session!

For your baby, it's generally useful to have your normal changing bag with you, including nappies, wipes and everything you'd usually need for feeding.

If parents or siblings will be photographed too, I will provide advice beforehand about what everyone should wear.

Don't feel as though you need to arrive with half your house packed into the car. You really only need your baby, milk and nappies!

Should parents and siblings be included?

For me, yorkshire newborn photography isn't only about photographing your baby.

These photographs are also about the beginning of your family—or the moment your family became a little bigger.

Photographs with parents can capture just how tiny your baby once looked in your arms. If there are older brothers or sisters, including them can document a relationship that's only just beginning.

You might not feel particularly camera-ready a few days or weeks after giving birth, and that's completely understandable. But these are often the photographs that become increasingly meaningful as the years pass.

How do I choose a Yorkshire newborn photographer?

Start by looking at complete examples of their newborn work rather than choosing purely on price.

Do you love the way their photographs look? Can you imagine photographs in that style hanging in your home?

It's also worth finding out what the session includes, where it takes place, whether family photographs are included, how you'll receive or choose your finished photographs and what the total cost is likely to be.

Most importantly, choose someone you feel comfortable trusting with your new baby.

Don't be afraid to ask questions before booking

So, when should I book my newborn photoshoot?

If you're currently pregnant and know you'd like newborn photographs, now is a good time to start looking for your photographer covering Leeds and Halifax.

Booking during pregnancy gives you time to find someone whose work you genuinely love rather than trying to make a quick decision once your baby has arrived.

And if your baby is already here? Get in touch anyway. You may still be able to arrange a beautiful newborn session.

Those first weeks have a funny way of feeling incredibly long when you're living them—and impossibly short when you look back.

Tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, wispy hair, wrinkled feet and the way your baby fits against your chest won't stay quite like this for long.

Photographs give you something tangible to return to when they don't feel quite so tiny anymore.
