Colourful Wedding Inspiration at Ponden Mill, Haworth

If bold colour, relaxed styling and wedding photographs that actually feel like you are your thing, you’re going to love this one.

I recently had the pleasure of photographing this colourful styled wedding shoot at Ponden Mill in Haworth, bringing together an incredible team of Yorkshire wedding suppliers to show just how much personality you can bring to this wonderfully characterful venue.

The inspiration was full of colour and texture: vibrant dahlias and roses, shades of pink, coral and orange, trailing ribbons, retro stationery, disco balls, candlelight and an amazing statement cake. All of it set against the old stone, dark timber and surrounding Yorkshire countryside of Ponden Mill.

And the contrast worked beautifully.

A colourful Ponden Mill wedding

One of the things I loved most about this shoot was the decision to embrace colour.

Rustic and countryside weddings are often associated with neutral tones, greenery and muted palettes, but there's absolutely no rule saying you have to go down that route.

Here, bright pinks, reds, peaches and oranges brought the whole space to life.

The bouquet was bursting with dahlias, roses and loose, delicate stems, while the groom's rich brown suit and floral buttonhole tied everything together. Against the bride's beautifully detailed lace gown, the colours really stood out.

It's a lovely example of choosing wedding styling because you genuinely love it, rather than because you feel it has to match a particular type of venue.

Getting ready at Ponden Mill

Before heading outside, we made the most of the softer light indoors for some relaxed bridal preparation photographs. Running water is the most idyllic setting for your wedding morning!

These are always some of my favourite images to capture on a wedding day.

The big moments matter, of course, but I also want to photograph the things happening quietly around them: putting on earrings, fastening a hairpiece, shoes waiting by the window, flowers on the table and those few minutes when everything starts to feel real.

Ponden Mill lends itself beautifully to this kind of photography. The natural window light, textured walls and darker corners give the images warmth and atmosphere without needing to manufacture it. Hair and makeup perfectly created by the very talented and lovely @bridalfinishingtouch.

Woodland wedding portraits in Haworth

Outside, the feeling changes completely.

Surrounded by woodland, ferns, old stone and open Yorkshire countryside, there's so much variety for photographs without having to travel elsewhere.

We kept the couple's portraits natural and movement-led. Walking together, getting close, laughing and letting things unfold rather than trying to make every photograph perfectly posed.

I particularly love the frames with a little movement and blur. There's something about them that feels more like remembering a moment than simply looking at a photograph of one.

For me, that's always the goal.

Bold outdoor ceremony inspiration

The outdoor ceremony set-up was an absolute explosion of colour.

A huge floral installation by the amazing @set_in_bloom sat above the ceremony backdrop, with long ribbons in orange, pink and red hanging beneath it. Against all the greenery surrounding Ponden Mill, it looked incredible.

It also proves you don't have to choose between a romantic countryside wedding and something modern, colourful and a little bit different.

You can have both.

In fact, the contrast is what makes it work.

Disco balls, candlelight and a seriously good wedding table

Inside, the styling took on another personality again. Styled by the very talented @hand.inhandweddingandevents the room was brought to life!

Long wooden tables were filled with colourful flowers, deep pink fabric, twisted candles, warm glassware and little mirrored disco balls, with hundreds of fairy lights glowing behind them.

It felt warm, intimate and fun rather than overly formal.

The stationery by @braw_stationery brought in a playful retro element too, with those gorgeous curving shapes and seventies-inspired typography appearing throughout the details and table settings.

Then there was the cake by the incredible @sweetchicuk - wow gorgeous!

A bold orange three-tier design decorated with flowers and sculptural white details, it was definitely not a cake designed to disappear quietly into the background — and I loved it for exactly that reason.

From wedding portraits to party photographs

Later in the shoot we switched things up completely.

The softer lace bridal look gave way to a sleek second outfit, cocktails appeared, the grazing table came out and inevitably we ended up behind the bar.

This is where I love letting wedding photography get a little less polished.

Flash. Movement. Drinks. Laughing. Dancing. Slightly chaotic photographs where everyone looks like they're actually having a brilliant time.

Because your gallery shouldn't only tell the story of how beautiful your wedding looked.

It should remind you how it felt.

Why Ponden Mill is such a brilliant place to photograph a wedding

This shoot gave us the opportunity to explore so many different sides of Ponden Mill.

You have characterful interiors, old stone, gorgeous natural light and cosy evening spaces, then you step outside into woodland and the surrounding countryside. It means a wedding gallery can have loads of variety while still feeling like one story.

More importantly, the venue doesn't dictate what your wedding has to look like.

You can lean fully into its rustic Yorkshire character, or you can cover the place in pink flowers, orange ribbons and disco balls.

Personally, I'm always here for couples making their wedding their own.
