What Happens During a Newborn Baby Photoshoot

The arrival of a new baby into the family is a joyous occasion and one that many choose to celebrate and cherish. Many new parents choose to capture this special moment in their lives with a newborn photoshoot, which can be a wonderful experience, with photos that you will treasure for a lifetime.

So, what happens during a newborn photoshoot?

In this article, we will discuss what you can expect from a newborn photoshoot, including when you should aim to get your photos taken and tips for parents on how to get the very best out of your photo shoot.

And don't forget... if you are looking for a specialist newborn photographer in Yorkshire, my studio Batley specialises in Maternity and Newborn Photography.

When Should I Schedule my Newborn Photoshoot?

For a newborn baby photoshoot, you will need to take photos when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. This is the best time to get those cute sleeping photos of your baby while they are still in that sleepy and docile phase of their life.

As newborn photoshoots are scheduled soon after birth, many parents plan and book their photoshoots before their baby is born. An experienced newborn baby photographer should be able to reserve you a couple of dates based on your due date, which is then confirmed once the baby is born.

What Should I Expect From a Newborn Photoshoot?

When you arrive at the photographer's studio, you'll be greeted by your photographer, who will have everything set up and ready to go.

The studio will be warmed to a comfortable temperature so that your baby is kept warm and cosy throughout the session and you should have plenty of time to get yourself and your baby ready.

Many newborns are photographed wearing a cute coordinating outfit or often only in their nappies snoozing under a soft blanket: these outfits, wraps and "props" are normally bought from companies that work with newborn photographers to create products that are perfect for tiny babies.

Your photographer will have a variety of props and backgrounds to choose from, with the lighting adjusted to get the perfect shot. You can discuss with your photographer ahead of the photoshoot the style of photos you are looking for, and discuss any outfits or poses you would like to try on the day.

If you choose to book your newborn photoshoot at my studio, you'll also receive a styling questionnaire that will help me create the perfect gallery for your family

Newborn photographers are experienced with working with small babies and should allow plenty of time for cuddles, and breaks for feeding and anything else that your baby may need. Usually a newborn baby photoshoot can take up to 3 hours and your photographer will ensure there is plenty of time to get the right shot so you don't feel rushed.

During the session, the photographer will work with you to get the perfect poses and positions from your baby. Depending on the photographer’s personal artistic style they may capture sweet details such as their tiny fingers and toes and of course their beautiful little face.

Can Parents Be Part of the Photoshoot?

Parents are more than welcome to be part of a newborn baby photoshoot and many newborn photographers will offer packages that include a family portrait as well as individual photos of your baby.

Talk to your photographer about the packages they offer and if you can included a family portrait.

If you do plan to be part of the photoshoot or have a family portrait, ensure that you are wearing comfortable clothes in plain neutral colours. This is to ensure that the focus is on your beautiful baby and so that you will look coordinated as a family.

What if My Baby Is Unsettled on the Day?

Not all babies are sleepy newborns and your photographer is not expecting your baby to stay sleepy and quiet during the entire photoshoot. If your baby is unsettled on the day you will have plenty of time to soothe and cuddle them, and the warm studio environment will help keep your baby more comfortable.

However, if your baby does not want to be laid down or parted from you, your photographer should be able to work around this. You can take some beautiful photos holding your baby in your arms or even sleeping on your shoulder.

It is also a great idea to bring a familiar toy or blanket from home that will feel comforting to your baby. This could also double up as a great photo prop on the day.

Can a Newborn Photoshoot Take Place at Home?

Some Newborn Photographers offer the option of in-home sessions however, shooting in a professional studio guarantees consistency in lighting, styling and ensures safety throughout the session.

In addition to this, there are other things you should consider when choosing the location for your session.

  • A professional studio will be ready for your visit, allowing your photographer to focus on your baby and produce some beautiful images.

  • A shoot taking place in a studio gives you full access to the entire range of props, wraps and backgrounds offered by the photographer.

  • A photographer will normally book the studio for your family for the full day, so there will be no distractions. Shooting at home means there might be unexpected visits or deliveries interrupting the flow.

Finally, a newborn photoshoot is a fun and special experience for you, that you will treasure and look back on over time. Remember that newborn photographers have plenty of experience working with small babies and will be patient and supportive during your photoshoot. The main purpose of the photoshoot after all is to create some beautiful memories for both you and your baby to cherish.
