What's the inside scoop on the new Cake Smashing craze?!

May 11, 2017

Cake Smash... what the heck is this I hear many of my mummies say at my newborn shoots... I always mention it because babies grow from newborn to one in the blink of an eye, and before you know it, that little bundle being wrapped up and photographed in a lovely wicker basket, is crawling and wriggling all over, with a little personality of its own!

So what does it entail, and why, all of a sudden are we going crazy for them? Well, I will let you into a little secret... they are so popular because they are not only super cute, but unlike a standard baby in front of a backdrop shoot, they are so much fun, and in those few hours of messy play and shooting some amazing images, mummies tend to remember these moments forever - one of those everlasting happy place memories that you tap into when you are having one of those 'my child is a demon' days (admit it, we all have them!).How do I know all this? Because I not only shoot them, I have had them for my kids too... and I LOVED it!

So, the nitty gritty if you are still sat here reading thinking 'ok Louise, that's all well and good.. but what actually is it?!'

Pretty much what is says on the tin - with a few lovely extras! On my shoots, I spend a lot of time chatting with the parents prior to their shoots and exactly what theme they have in mind.. I'm all about getting into my parents heads and creating their vision for the session - if baby loves diggers, or mummy loves pink and peach, then that's what I work to... I have an endless amount of props in my house (to my husbands delight!) and love to come up with new themes and ideas for the sessions - keep your eyes peeled for a dinosaur shoot in the second half of the year as it is going to be EPIC!

So we decide on the shoot - and then the day arrives...we hold the shoot at my studio or at the parents' house - whatever works for the mummy and baby... and I set up the backdrop and theme, and place the cake in the mix - and get some fab pics of the setup...

Its then time to get smashing - we sit the baby in the setup and let him/her go wild! Some babies love the feel of the icing and we get some great icing smile shots - others prefer to smash it with a spoon.. it all works for fab pics!

Post icing mess, I fill up my mini tin bath and we get baby nice and clean (mummies love this as they get a squeaky clean baby in return!) Babies and Bubble baths are always a hit, and I keep my bubble machine nearby for added bubble fun and extra giggling!

I then have a jolly good clean up while mum and baby get dry and have cuddles and then if the family want to jump in for a final few images then I'm always game for that!

And of course - it wouldn't be a birthday if the baby didn't get a little present now would it?!

Each child gets a personalised vest beautifully wrapped stating the date they smashed their cake - great to have a little picture in and lovely for mum and dad to put in babies memory box...

So that's pretty much what it entails... and I know you will maybe be sat wondering what the images look like... head over to my galleries to have a peek - super cute and a great gift for the rest of the family!

All of the above is why I love cake smashing with little ones... I whole heartedly thank America for bringing this craze over (I also thank America for fat Coke and McDonalds post hangover) but I thank them more for this!

If you are weighing it up - I would 100% say, GO FOR IT - you wont regret it

Over and Out for now beautiful people

Much Love

LP xx
